Job Description: Research Intern at Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI)
AJ Personnel is recruiting for an exciting internship opportunity at the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), a leading African research organization located within the University of the Witwatersrand. Wits RHI focuses on tackling key public health challenges in Africa including HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology.

Main Purpose of the Job
The Research Intern will be responsible for supporting daily research activities including administration, laboratory tasks, data collection, quality control, and community recruitment. The role also ensures compliance with regulatory and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards within Wits RHI’s research projects.
Key Performance Areas
- Assist medical staff with stock control and laboratory documentation.
- Manage sample capturing, storage, and shipping using LDMS.
- Support regulatory officers during monitoring visits and maintain regulatory files.
- Ensure staff compliance with GCP training and regulatory documentation.
- Promote studies through community engagements such as presentations and distribution of brochures.
- Recruit and screen participants according to study SOPs, schedule appointments, and maintain participant records.
- Administer study questionnaires and follow up with participants to support retention and adherence to study visits.
- Verify data accuracy from source documents to Case Report Forms (CRFs) and support timely data transmission.
- Conduct quality control on Informed Consent Forms (ICFs) and source documentation.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and assist with corrective actions from monitoring reviews.
- Transcribe and translate audio files from focus group discussions and interviews.
- Maintain effective communication, demonstrate self-management, and engage in career development activities.
Required Education and Experience
- Degree in a health-related field.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical research environment.

- Confidentiality, tact, and discretion.
- Strong organizational and administration skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload and work independently or within a multidisciplinary team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills; empathy towards vulnerable populations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Zulu advantageous.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of GCP principles, laboratory activities, data collection, and community recruitment.
