Gauteng Department of Health: Medicine Bursaries 2025
The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting students to apply for the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro bursary programme for the 2025 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded to students from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng, to study Medicine in Cuba.
The Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro (NMFC) Programme was established by the late president Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro in 1996. The programme was developed to address the dearth of doctors who practise in rural, peri-urban, and informal settlements.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be between 18 and 30 years old by the closing date
- You must permanently reside in Gauteng province and Matriculate in Gauteng
- You must be from a disadvantaged community
- You must be interested in studying towards a Medicine qualification in Cuba, in 2025
- You must have completed Matric with a university entrance pass
- You must have achieved a minimum level 4 pass (50%) for English, Mathematics, Biology/Life Sciences, and Physical Science in Matric
- You must NOT have been registered with any public or private higher education institution
- You must NOT have received any other form of bursary funding

- ID document (certified copy)
- Matric certificate and transcript (certified copy)
- Parents or guardians ID documents (certified copies)
- Parents or guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ sworn affidavit if unemployed)
- Proof of residence (validated by the Ward Councillor and Municipality Bill or a municipal bill)
