ActionAid International (AAI) is currently inviting applications for two Finance Intern positions based at our Global Secretariat hubs in Johannesburg and Nairobi. This 6-month internship offers a valuable opportunity for recent graduates interested in developing a career in finance within a global NGO committed to social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication.

Job Description

The Finance Interns will gain practical exposure supporting multi-country financial operations across various departments. Key responsibilities include assisting with payments processing, ledger maintenance, audit support, reconciliations, budgeting, and compliance activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support processing of multi-geographical payments ensuring accuracy and adherence to policies.
  • Assist payroll operations and posting of recharge transactions across countries.
  • Maintain financial data and support month-end and year-end closure processes.
  • Prepare audit files and schedules; assist with internal and external audit coordination.
  • Process credit card expenses and reconciliations, and manage recharge mailbox transactions.
  • Assist with balance sheet reconciliations and clearance of outstanding items.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting by collecting data, updating templates, and analysing expenditure trends.
  • Contribute to federation planning, project accounting, and responding to finance queries.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will be recent graduates with degrees in Finance or Accounting, demonstrating a foundational understanding of accounting principles (IFRS or local GAAP favorable). Prior exposure to financial or administrative work through internships, volunteering, or part-time roles is desirable.

  • Knowledge of bookkeeping, financial reporting, internal controls, audit processes, payroll, procurement, and risk management.
  • Strong numeracy, analytical skills, attention to detail, and organisational capability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with accounting systems, Power BI, or AI tools advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently with integrity and commitment to ActionAid’s feminist leadership values.
