Africa Division Human Rights Watch Internships

Job Description

The Africa Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a university student intern to join their Johannesburg Office from April 2026 through August 2026. This part-time internship requires availability of 18-20 hours per week and primarily focuses on research and ongoing projects relating to South Africa and Eswatini.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct desk research including small research assignments
  • Monitor media and compile reports on news related to South Africa and Eswatini
  • Analyze data and identify key human rights issues
  • Draft documents concerning issues in South Africa and Eswatini
  • Attend and assist in planning substantive meetings
  • Participate in additional projects aligned with interests and abilities

Interns will also have opportunities to attend lectures, training sessions, professional development workshops, and special events relating to human rights. The internship offers valuable networking with HRW staff, volunteers, and other interns, allowing students to apply academic skills in a professional human rights setting.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program throughout the internship duration
  • Proficient reading and writing skills in English
  • Strong interest in human rights issues, particularly in the South African region
  • Relevant coursework in related fields is highly desirable
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, reliable, with keen attention to detail
  • Computer competency, including Microsoft Office, Excel, and internet research skills
  • Valid work authorization for South Africa for the entire internship period

Compensation and Academic Credit

Interns based in South Africa will receive a gross monthly stipend of R6,000, prorated according to hours worked, to help cover living expenses in compliance with HRW policies. HRW internships may also provide opportunities for academic credit. Students should consult their academic institutions regarding specific credit requirements.
