Job Description
The Waste Management & Recycling Intern will support environmental sustainability initiatives by effectively sorting and separating recyclable and non-recyclable materials. This role helps the organization meet its sustainability targets by reducing landfill contributions and promoting responsible waste handling practices.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Waste Sorting and Segregation
- Sort waste materials into appropriate categories:
- Bio-degradable Waste – placed into the Bokashi bin for composting
- Mixed Waste
- Plastic and Polystyrene
- Tin & Glass
- Ensure bins are not contaminated by incorrect items
- Monitor bin levels and notify the supervisor when collection or replacement is needed
- Identify and handle hazardous or non-recyclable items correctly
2. Recycling Support and Compliance
- Assist with preparation of recyclable materials for collection or transport
- Follow company and regulatory guidelines for waste handling and recycling
- Support awareness initiatives by guiding employees on proper waste disposal practices
3. Site Cleanliness and Safety
- Maintain cleanliness around waste collection and sorting areas
- Report safety hazards or non-compliance issues
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to health and safety protocols
4. Reporting and Record-Keeping
- Record quantities of sorted materials as required
- Assist in compiling basic reports on waste volumes and recycling rates
- Notify management of any issues with waste collection or sorting equipment
