City of Cape Town: Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme 2025

The City of Cape Town is inviting suitably qualified, unemployed youth aged 18 to 34 to apply for a Learnership in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. This comprehensive training will be conducted by the Public Safety Training College, spanning a period of 18 months from June 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 qualification (documentary proof required)
  • Permanent resident within the jurisdiction of Cape Town (documentary proof required)
  • Proficient in English and at least one other official language
  • Currently unemployed (students and EPWP staff eligible to apply)
  • Aged between 18 and 34 years
  • Medically and physically fit for strenuous physical training
  • Aware of health status and capabilities for fitness assessments; excellent physical fitness and mental resilience required
  • Able to work in a team and cope with stressful situations
  • No criminal record
  • Valid driving license (minimum code B for manual transmission)
  • No visible tattoos while wearing any service uniform

Trainees must successfully complete the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and the Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012.

 

Note: All shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake and pass compulsory fitness tests. The fitness testing component is an elimination process; applicants will be eliminated from subsequent tests if they fail to meet the requirements of preceding tests.

Fitness Tests

  • 2.4 km run (Males: 11 minutes; Females: 13 minutes)
  • 1-minute Push-ups test (both males and females: 30 in 60 seconds)
  • 1-minute Sit-up test (both males and females: 30 in 60 seconds)
  • Dead load carry over 100m (both males and females: 2 x 25kg weight; one in each hand)
  • Tyre Drag over 20m distance (both males and females)
  • 20m Shuttle Runs (both males and females: 10 shuttle runs in 60 seconds)
  • 2.1 meter wall clearing (both males and females)
  • Motorcycle Reach Test (both males and females)
  • Comfort Swim (both males and females: any stroke; unassisted)

Due to the physical requirements, pregnant individuals will not be allowed to undergo the physical assessments.

Candidates Will:

  • Be required to pass a written assessment and an interview
  • Be required to pass a physical assessment
  • Submit fingerprints and identity numbers for criminal record checks
  • Undergo a City medical evaluation
  • Undergo a compulsory drug test at a City testing venue
  • Pass a driver assessment
  • Adhere to the code of conduct of the Public Safety Training College and pass requirements stipulated by the College in line with relevant unit standards
