Position Purpose: Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient driving/handling of all different types of trains/locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passengers) to ensure that the customers’ freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition and on time, enabling the organization to satisfy customer needs.
Responsibilities:
- Sign on duty at the designated workplace and be allocated duties to perform for the duration of the shift.
- Assist in performing various administrative duties.
- Determine which locomotive needs to be prepared.
- Obtain and place equipment on the locomotive.
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
- Assist with starting up of locomotive and locomotive brake tests.
- Couple locomotive.
- Obtain and check the functionality of radio equipment when applicable.
- Perform pre-trip preparations of the locomotives and the entire train prior to departure to adhere to roadworthiness and safety standards.
- Attach/detach vehicles according to the work order in absence of guard personnel.
- Perform brake tests in conjunction with the train driver.
- Execute shunting activities and observe safe working procedures.
- Provide accurate feedback to the Train Driver regarding incidents and deviations along the route.
- Complete the Train journal and submit it to the Section Manager at sign-off to ensure timely processing of monthly salary.
